LIFE REFLECTIONS OF MRS. ELIZABETH "BETTY" WASHINGTON
Elizabeth "Betty" Washington, 73, departed this earthly life on July 19, 2025, while in the care of Mount Sinai Hospital, in New York, New York. She was preceded in death by her parents, three daughters: Cherece Simmons, Renee Washington, and Pauline "Pinky" Pollock, and one brother Jeffrey Simmons.
Betty was born on December 21, 1951, to the late Thomasena Rock Simmons and the late Henry Arthur Simmons Sr., Betty spent her early years in a loving Christian home in Pineville, South Carolina before moving to New York City as a teenager. New York City would be her beloved home for the remainder of her life. On February 8, 1969, she met and married Paul Washington and from that union four children were born.
Betty loved life and those around her. For more than 50 years she faithfully attended Second Canaan Baptist Church where she served on the usher board, sung in various choirs, and poured into children by serving as Boy Scout Chapter Leader for Pack & Troupe 872. She did all of this while holding various jobs including acting as a home health aide and caregiver until her retirement.
Betty leaves to cherish her loving memory, her children: Yvonne Montgomery (David) and Arkeyla Washington of New York, and Gregory Coard (Katrina) of Virginia; 37 grandchildren; 21 greatgrandchildren; 4 adopted daughters, Denita Lee, Latrell Reagans, Marlene Russell, and Stephanie Parker; 2 sisters, Earlene Johnson and Iris Washington (Donald) of South Carolina; 3 brothers, Henry Simmons Jr. (Kim) of California, and Jerry Simmons (Ritha) and Carl Simmons (Prena) of South Carolina; one sister-in-law, Patricia Simmons of South Carolina; one uncle, Frank Rock of New Jersey; 5 god-children, Amir Harris, Ashley Harris, Lauren Holley, Nathan Rogers, and Shakiera Thomas; 4 close sister/friends, Barbara Alston, Darlene McClary Titus, Josie Graddick, and Regina Graham; and a host of nieces, nephews, community children, relatives, and friends.
The family will be receiving guests at their residence starting Thursday, July 31, 2025 from 5pm - 9pm at 346 Kit Field, Moncks Corner, SC
Services for Mrs. Betty will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025 in New York, NY. Mrs. Betty will be flown back home to South Carolina where there will be a service and she will be laid to rest in Pineville, SC. We do pray for traveling mercies as the family travels from New York to South Carolina and back to New York.
