Divinity Mortuary, with hearts joined alongside the Augustus family regret to announce the passing of Carl Coleman Augustus, Sr., 93, of St. Stephen, SC who entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
LIFE REFLECTIONS OF CHIEF MASTER Sgt. CARL C. AUGUSTUS, SR.
CHIEF MASTER Sergeant Carl Coleman Augustus, Sr. was born June 23, 1932, in Washington, D.C., to Vie Parker-Augustus & Rufus Augustus. He was the eldest of three children, her brothers George Augustus, (deceased).
Mr. Augustus graduated from high school in Washington, D.C., and after graduation, he met and married Joann Carter. In which they remained married to for 72 years prior to Joann's passing. They were the proud parents of four children JoAnn V. Augustus (deceased), Carl C. Augustus, Jr., Maria W. Vass, and Hans R. Augustus and eight grandchildren.
Mr. Augustus joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19, so after he transferred over to the U.S. Air Force where he served in Finance for 30 years. He served his country for a total of 31 years, traveling the world while supporting his wife and raising their children. He was also a trained boxer being a part of the U.S. Air Force Team (Fly Weight) and taught many other children worldwide how to box. He won many championships and tournaments, was featured in many articles and genuinely loved the sport while helping other children on their athletic journeys. Upon settling in St. Stephens, SC with his family he joined Zion United Methodist Church, now New Life United Methodist Church, where he would attend with his wife. In his later years he would ride with his daughter to visit Eagle City Ministries in Goose Creek where he built a closer relationship with God and encouraged, and occasionally even prayed for, people.
Mr. Augustus also known as "Mr. Pay". He completed higher education and two tours in Vietnam, enduring combat conditions at forward operating locations. Renowned for his impeccable standards, his reputation for "down to the penny" accuracy was widely known. During his free time, he loved to fish, hunt, take pictures, work on projects, and spend time with loved ones and friends telling stories of his adventures and showing them all his pictures. He cherished above all else his children and grandchildren, they held a prized place within his heart. He had a favorite saying that encapsulated his philosophy: “As long as you’re swinging, you’re dangerous.”
Mr. Augustus's wife, JoAnn C. Augustus and their daughter JoAnn V. Augustus preceded him in death.
Mr. Augustus leaves to cherish his memories with his children Carl C. Augustus, Jr. (Lillian) of Italy, Maria W. Vass (Darryl) Hart of Summerville, SC and Hans Augustus (Maria) of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren Robert A. Williams (Temeka) of Charlotte, NC, Sean A. Williams (Kimberly) of Las Vegas, NV, Teresia M. Phommola of Williamsburg, VA, JoAnn W. Augustus of Germany, Erica S. Augustus of West Palm Beach, FL, Leah C. Augustus of Germany, Rebecca K. Augustus of Tampa, FL and Nina W. Augustus of England; his brother Gordon, Burbank, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, family & friends.
